Why We Invested in RxPost

What is RxPost

RxPost is a marketplace that allows independent pharmacies to buy and sell surplus drugs to avoid losses on inventory.

The Current Independent Pharmacy Landscape

Pharmacies have been a core part of healthcare infrastructure for thousands of years. While the industry has evolved significantly, their fundamental role has remained largely unchanged: ensuring patients can access the medications they need. Today, large pharmacy chains operate massive national footprints, while independent pharmacies continue to play an important role in communities across the country.

As technology and markets change, patients still need access to medications from pharmacies they trust. Enabling these pharmacies to operate more efficiently and with less friction can have meaningful downstream benefits for patients. Yet today, independent pharmacies face significant economic and operational headwinds.

There are approximately 19,000 independent pharmacies operating in the U.S., representing roughly 36% of retail pharmacies and a market that generated approximately $103 billion in sales in 2024. More than 15 million Americans rely on independent pharmacies for optimal geographic access to pharmacy services. Shrinking reimbursement, rising operating costs, increasing regulatory complexity, and limited purchasing leverage have put additional pressure on already thin margins. At the same time, independent pharmacy gross margins fell to approximately 18.2% in 2024, a 10-year low.

Independent pharmacies remain an important part of the U.S. healthcare system, but the economics of operating one have become increasingly difficult.

What Does RxPost Offer?

RxPost is building technology infrastructure for independent pharmacies, starting with a marketplace to support inventory optimization. The platform allows pharmacies to buy and sell medications directly with other verified pharmacies. This helps pharmacies reduce waste, recover value from excess inventory, access medications at competitive prices, and ultimately better serve their patients.

RxPost provides the infrastructure to facilitate these transactions while helping pharmacies navigate the associated compliance requirements. For example, a pharmacy may have an expensive medication sitting on its shelf that is approaching expiration with no patient who needs it. Through RxPost, that pharmacy can sell the medication to another pharmacy that has a patient who needs it. The selling pharmacy recovers value from inventory that could otherwise become a loss, while the buying pharmacy gains access to medication it needs, often at an attractive price.

The result is a more efficient way to move medication where it is needed, while reducing the likelihood that valuable inventory expires unused.

Why Now?

Independent pharmacies are under increasing financial pressure: reimbursement compression, higher drug acquisition and operating costs, thin margins, and pharmacy closures. The inventory problem has always existed, but these external pressures have only exacerbated it. Pharmacies have often lacked the exact medication a patient needs, and it’s costly to stock up and try to predict the exact timing.

RxPost directly addresses this inventory mismatch, while building the infrastructure to solve additional problems for pharmacies over time. The value RxPost brings is felt from day one. Building a trusted marketplace that has a verification process, compliance infrastructure, pharmacy relationships, transaction data, and workflows necessary for pharmacies to use it is not easy. There are hundreds of pharmacies on the RxPost platform, many of them active daily, and this number is growing quickly. RxPost enables inventory to move between pharmacies based on demand, not guesswork. This adds liquidity and flexibility to a traditionally rigid supply chain.

Marketplace as the Wedge

RxPost solves a major pain point from day one, without adding significant overhead costs for pharmacies. This allows them to have a short sales cycle, prove their value quickly, and build long term relationships with their customers.

As a result, RxPost is able to be a true partner to pharmacies now as they continue to create the foundation for what they can become tomorrow. By keeping the customer top of mind, they’ve been able to deliver significant value and show no signs of slowing down.

Capital Efficient Growth

One of the most impressive things about Amantha and RxPost is the fast and sustained growth they’ve achieved with relatively little capital. The team has scaled from inception to $5M in annual revenue while raising about $2.5M (including our investment). They have remained profitable while growing more than 3x year over year, with churn remaining almost nonexistent.

At the time of our commitment to RxPost, they were doing less than $2M in annual revenue and have continued to show that same discipline on a daily basis.

RxPost listened to the needs of its customers and delivered an exceptional service that has allowed them to scale. They did not try to manufacture something out of thin air to drive revenue. The repeat nature of their customers demonstrates the underlying need and customer demand, and continues to support their efficiency and growth. This gives RxPost the ability to create new solutions for its customers without risking the underlying health of the business.

Founder-Market Fit

Amantha, founder and CEO of RxPost, spent nearly 20 years in pharmacy. She experienced this issue on a very deep level and struggled to do what she cared most about, serving patients as best as she could. She has had maniacal focus on her customers and making sure RxPost is providing the best solution on the market. She has also been able to surround herself with people who buy into the vision, and are also excited to change the course of pharmacy.

Understanding pharmacy and being able to speak the language needed to sell, and also build a successful solution is not easy. Amantha has been able to strike the balance exceptionally well and this paired with the long term vision creates an incredible amount of opportunity for them to scale.

The Bigger Vision: Infrastructure for Pharmacy

What is currently a marketplace for pharmacies to buy and sell excess drugs can become the future for how pharmacies operate on almost every level. The need is so great and this segment of healthcare is ripe for innovation. The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) has identified stronger technology infrastructure as a key priority for the future, specifically highlighting areas such as data governance, AI, and interoperability. These are areas where we believe RxPost could play an increasingly important role as they grow.

With hundreds of daily users already on the platform, the need is clearly there and their solution is resonating. Over the long term, we believe there is a path for RxPost to support the broader pharmacy market, not just independent pharmacies.

Why Stone Mountain Ventures Invested

At Stone Mountain, the goal is to invest in exceptional founders who are changing the future of healthcare. RxPost is building the infrastructure necessary to grow into a massive company, while supporting the lives of many. As the marketplace scales, RxPost can become increasingly embedded in and necessary to a pharmacy’s day-to-day operations.

We believe Amantha and the RxPost team have the opportunity to fundamentally change how pharmacies operate, and we are excited to support them along the way.
